Natural Flu Remedies at home for cold and flu season

So, it is that time of the year again. Suddenly, everyone around you is coughing and sneezing. As the cold comes, we spend more time indoors, sharing air, surfaces, and that’s the most suitable environment for germs to spread.
We all can relate to how awful it feels when we catch a cold or the flu. It drains all your energy, and you just want to stay in bed, and that is okay! But rest alone isn’t always enough to help your body fight back.
Honestly, there’s no magic cure for the flu. Medicine can’t kill the virus. What really heals you is your immune system, which creates antibodies against the virus, and then you slowly start to feel better.
While your immune system is fighting the germs, you need some natural flu remedies to ease the symptoms and boost recovery.
That’s what this blog is about: I’ll share simple yet most effective natural flu remedies that will help you feel more comfortable and recover faster from the flu.
What happens when you get the flu
Flu and cold are mainly caused by the influenza virus, and the virus primarily attacks our respiratory system—the nose, throat, and lungs. Our immune system then releases chemicals and sends immune cells (T-cells) to fight it.
These chemicals help kill the virus, but they also cause swelling and irritation in the body. So the symptoms like fever, chills, coughing, and muscle pain are actually signs of your immune response to fight the infection and heal damaged tissues.
Usually, our body creates immunity for the flu on its own, but sometimes, especially if your immune system is weak, the flu can lead to serious complications. That’s why you need to give your body extra support with effective natural flu remedies.
So, let’s dive into some effective cold and flu home remedies that will help you recover fast.

ACV has antibacterial properties and helps balance the body’s pH. It also soothes a sore throat and reduces mucus discomfort.

11. Peppermint tea
Peppermint tea has also been used traditionally as a cold and flu medicine. It has a natural menthol compound that soothes sore throats and eases congestion, reduces inflammation, and eases body aches. Peppermint tea is my favourite herbal tea that I prefer in the winter season.
12. Chicken soup
Chicken soup might not cure the flu, but it will help you feel comfortable. It will warm up and hydrate your body, which helps soothe a sore throat and ease congestion.
When making it, include ingredients like carrots, celery, onions, garlic, chicken, and broth. These add anti-inflammatory benefits, give you a quick energy boost, and support your immune system.
My Favourite Flu Tonic:
These flu tonics are my go-to elixirs during flu season, and I’ve been using them for years. I’m almost certain they can help you recover faster when you do catch the flu.
1. Immunity Shot
It’s easy to prepare, and most effective natural remedy for flu and cold.
Ingredients:
- Lemons (2 whole, peeled)
- Fresh ginger (about two big bunches)
- Garlic (1 whole, peeled)
- Turmeric (Fresh or powder, 2 tablespoons)
- Black pepper (1 tablespoon)
- Cinnamon (1 tablespoon)
- Black seed (1 teaspoon)
- Cayenne pepper (1½ tablespoons)
- Apple cider vinegar (1½ tablespoons)
- Honey (1 tablespoon)
- Water (3 cups)
How I make:
I blend all the ingredients with water until smooth, then strain the liquid to remove the pulp. Then pour the liquid into an ice tray and freeze it. When I need one, I drop a portion into hot water, stir, and drink.
This way, I don’t have to prepare everything when I’m already sick. It’s quick, comforting, and much easier to drink than forcing raw ingredients. You can take this twice a day for the best result, or at least once until you get better.
2. Lemon, Ginger, Honey Tea
This one is my favourite as it tastes good and I can have it multiple times, and I drink it throughout the winter.
How I make it:
For this, you just need to blend or finely chop the ginger. And for my convenience, I always keep it in my fridge in an ice tray. When I need to boil a cube in hot water, I strain it and add 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of lemon and a pinch of pink salt or sea salt. That’s it, simple as that. It’s refreshing, tasty and will give you instant comfort.
3. Ginger candy for Sore thought

Ingredients:
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons honey
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
How to make it:
In a non-stick pan, gently melt the brown sugar and honey over medium-low heat until it turns golden. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix everything.
Now, in a spoon, take a little amount and pour it onto a baking paper and let it cool. Once they’ve set, store the candies in an airtight container in the fridge to keep them fresh. This recipe makes about 20–25 candies.
These little treats are packed with antibacterial compounds, which make them a simple and effective natural remedy for the flu.
Key Vitamins to Boost Immunity
Honestly, there is no specific cold and flu medicine, but there are some supplements that can help your body fight the virus and recover faster.
Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and Zinc
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that is crucial for your body to fight against infections, vitamin D supports overall immune health, and zinc helps immune cells (T-cells) function properly to reduce the length and severity of the flu.
During the last few years, when I went to the pharmacy after I got the flu, I was always prescribed the Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Zinc supplements. So, now I just add these supplements with the natural flu remedies, and I am good to go.
Probiotics
Probiotics are good bacteria in the gut that not only maintain gut health but also play a big role in keeping your immune system strong. They help to absorb nutrients like protein and calcium, and reduce the chances of getting upper respiratory infections.
When you have the flu, your gut bacteria become weak as they fight the virus, so taking a probiotic supplement or eating probiotic-rich foods can help give your immune system a boost to recover fast.
Home Remedies to relieve Congestion and Discomfort
Gargle with salt water.
This is an old trick. Honestly, it tastes gross. But it works so well. If your throat is swollen and full of mucus, the salt pulls that fluid out. It makes the swelling go down. It also washes away mucus and bacteria. Do this three or four times a day. Believe me, your throat will thank you.
Use a Humidifier
In the winter, the air becomes dry. And when you turn on the Heaters, the air becomes even drier, and breathing in this dry air makes the mucus thick and hard in the nose and throat.
A humidifier will add moisture to the air that will soothe your dry nose, loosen the mucus, and reduce congestion. Just make sure to clean the machine, so mould doesn’t grow in it.
Steam inhalation
Inhaling hot steam magically helps to melt the congestion and clear the sinuses. You can make your own steam, putting hot water in a bowl and covering it with a towel. Stay under the towel for five or ten minutes. You will come out looking sweaty and red, but your nose will be open.
But I prefer a stamer machine, I have sinusitis, so during the winter I mostly have congestion problems, and this Vicks Steam Inhaler has been a blessing for me, it’s super convenient to use, I can control the steam, and for the best result I add a little amount of menthol or eucalyptus oil.
Note- Menthol will have a very strong effect. Add just a little to hot water and inhale slowly to clear out the congestion.
Elevate your head while sleeping.
Use two pillows to keep your head bit up. Make a little ramp for your back. It will help the fluid drain down instead of getting stuck. It might feel weird at first, but you will sleep better because it will help your breathing.
Eat spicy foods
This might sound a bit unusual, but the heat in chilli peppers stimulates the nose, making the mucus thin and runny, which will help it get out easily.
Stay hydrated
When you have the flu, your body cells fight and lose water. So you need to stay hydrated. It helps your body wash away the toxins and loosen the mucus, and reduce your headaches too. Instead of drinking cold water, drink herbal teas, soup, and ginger water. These will both keep you hydrated and also work as natural flu remedies.
Get Proper rest
When you have the flu, you need to rest properly. It will help your body use the energy to fight the virus and recover faster. Good Sleep is also important. When you sleep, your body produces important proteins that help fight infection and strengthen your immune system.
When to Seek Medical Help
Seek emergency help if you get sudden chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, coughing up blood or get Seizures. After using natural flu remedies, if your symptoms don’t improve within 7 days or get worse, then check with your health care professional.
